When is Mole Removal Important?
The majority of the mole removal procedures conducted today is because of esthetic reasons. Though some people believe that moles on the face are beauty marks, there is also a strong mentality of getting them removed. These are the people who approach cosmetic surgeons who have expertise in mole removal.
Another very important reason for mole removal is that they might be melanomas. These are already carcinogenic or could turn so if they persist for a long period of time. If the mole appears to be changing in color, size or shape, then it could be a melanoma. People with such moles go to a surgeon for proper diagnosis and removal if needed.
How is Mole Removal done Medically?
Mole removal can be done at a cosmetic surgery center or at a doctor’s clinic. The procedure used is basically simple. A mole is first sterilized and numbed and then removed with a sharp instrument. Generally, there is no pain associated with such a procedure. Once the mole has been removed, the area left behind is sealed with the help of stitches.
Another method practiced in many cosmetic surgery centers is to take a sharp instrument and directly cut away the mole at its root. If the mole has already dug deeper into the skin, then the cut is made in a concave shape, slightly deeper than the skin level. This may still leave some of the mole behind, which is then burnt or cauterized.
Laser surgery is also sometimes used for mole removal, especially by people who do not wish to undergo the painful procedure. Laser surgery includes making laser incident on the mole so that it is burnt away. However, most cosmetic surgeons will not prefer laser surgery because it is not very effective. Lasers cannot be expected to go deep into the mole, which always leaves some of it behind.
Another novel method for mole removal is to freeze the area. The mole is treated with liquid nitrogen in a very topical manner. The part of the skin that comes into contact with liquid nitrogen gets frozen. Hence, the mole itself gets frozen. Such a frozen mole can then be very easily removed from the surface of the skin.
It is very difficult to remove moles that have embedded themselves so deeply in the skin that it becomes difficult to remove them completely. These moles appear almost flattened on the surface of the skin. In order to remove them, a scalpel is used to cut into the surface and remove the mole. Stitches are always required to close the wound that is left behind after removing the mole in this manner.
