Sunscreen for Baby Skin Care
Baby skin is extremely sensitive to the intensity of the sun’s rays, particularly damaging UVA and UVB rays. Before taking baby outside, make sure to use a sunscreen that is specially formulated for baby skin care. Remember to put a light coating not just on the baby’s face, but also arms, hands, ears, neck, feet and legs – basically any skin that is exposed to the sun. Also, clothe your baby in sun hats or other items that provide shade or protect the skin from direct exposure to the sun.
Baby Acne
Babies commonly have a condition that is a form of acne. Acne is the presence of bacteria that infects the pores of the skin and forms small whiteheads. Usually baby acne will disappear on its own, but if it is present for several weeks, talk to the doctor about baby skin care products that can be safely used to clean the skin and prevent further breakouts.
Since a baby’s skin is so extremely sensitive, it is not a good idea to over clean the baby’s skin or use excessive lotions or creams that are designed for adolescent or adult skin. Instead consult your doctor for appropriate baby skin care products that will keep the skin clean and free of bacteria.
Heat Rash
Heat rash will develop on a sensitive baby’s skin if the child is over dressed, particularly during hot weather. Also called prickly heat, heat rash looks like small raised bumps on a red spot of skin, usually on the neck or the back. A cool bath will help reduce the discomfort. No other special baby skin care is needed for heat rash.
Dry Baby Skin
Baby skin is extremely sensitive. Many parents believe that a baby needs to be bathed every day, but really a newborn baby only needs to bathed once every few days, although if the baby develops cradle cap, then a daily scalp rinse will help with baby skin care.
When preparing a baby for a bath, have everything you need laid out before starting. Make sure the room is warm enough for the baby and have a towel ready for when you remove the baby from the water. Make sure to rinse the scalp completely to avoid cradle cap. Do not use talcum powder on a baby’s skin. Instead use baby skin care products that contain corn silk.
Summary
For parents with young babies, special attention needs to be paid to baby skin care. Of special concern is exposure to sun, baby acne and heat rash. Babies need to bathed regularly, but usually only every few days.
