Lip fillers are perfect for those who want a plump, full look to the lips. There are many different techniques and products available for augmenting the size and look of the lips, and its certain that their will be one that will meet the needs of any individual patient. In fact, there are some therapies that are so effective, some plastic surgeons are using them as permanent lip fillers.
It may take as little as 30 minutes to see results from an injectable lip filler. It is easy to undergo the procedure, since it is done on an outpatient basis without general anesthetic. In fact, it is rarely necessary to have even a local anesthetic, since there is often some type of pain killer such as lydocaine included in the actual gel that is injected into the lips.
Lip augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic procedures done currently, even more common than liposuction or breast enhancement, as popular as both of those procedures are.
Injectable lip fillers are a great way to see of lip augmentation is going to provide the look you want before you decide on a more permanent solution, like lip implants. A lip filler will last approximately six months, in general, although the results vary with each individual patient.
There are several different types of lip fillers, although collagen-based, injectable products are the most commonly used. The collagen products come in either animal derived or human derived collagen formulations.
Bovine or porcine-based collagen comes from tendons of cows or pigs that have been raised in carefully monitored, disease-free and closed herds. There is a three percent chance, based on clinical trials, that a patient will have an allergic reaction to the treatment, so it’s necessary to perform a pre-test with any animal-based collagen product to be sure that the patient is not allergic to the product. This test is done by injecting a small amount of the collagen into the forearm and watching for 4 weeks to see if there is any reaction.
There are several products that are used as bovine-based collagen lip augmentation substances, including Zyderm and Zyplast, as well as Artecoll. Artecoll has been shown in clinical tests to leave polymethylmethacrylate microspheres in the lips even after the collagen is reabsorbed into the body, leading to permanent augmentation.
Collagen taken from humans is easier for the body to absorb, and rarely causes any allergic reactions. This eliminates the need for the pre-treatment test when using these products, which include Fasican, Cosmoderm and Cosmoplast.
There are also hyaluronic acid lip fillers that utilize this acid to provide depth and structure to the lips. Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in the skin. It also binds with water molecules in the skin, leading to quicker, longer lasting results than are found with collagen products.
While face lifts and rhinoplasty procedures provide great results for some patients, others find that lip fillers do a great deal to enhance the look and appeal of the face.
